vintage wednesday

i have a huge collection of vintage photos, books and imagery!

knowing that i'll prolly never use all of it in my own work i've decided to start a new feature every wednesday called "vintage wednesday"!.

i'll post three images from my random collection of oldies and goodies. a lot of it is images i've had for many years and i'm sure i'll also tap into the collection of vintage scifi magazines piling up in my print studio.

now i can justify picking up even more to share with you guys!
oh wait, maybe that's not how it's supposed to work...

quilts!
it was weekend of quilts and wandering los angeles.
friday i hit up our local goodwill - nothing too exciting, picked up some regular clothes (mostly with new tags still on them!) and one fantastic vintage black coat. saturday morning on my way to the farmers market i swung into a local rummage sale and scored this great cozy vintage quilt for $8.00. yay!

i went to the Artisan Cheese Gallery in Studio City with a girlfriend for lunch on saturday and gosh was it yummy! Duck confit on a sandwich! I'll totally go back to try more and next time to buy more cheese when it's not crazy hot out. I made another hat on Saturday. this one is a tiny black velvet circle about three inches across. I slipped a headband into the lining and now i can wear it tilted forward near by bangs. see slightly crappy pic below. It has a vintage flower on it I bought years ago. It will be fun to switch out all sorts of fun things pinned to it!

Sunday I went to the Internationall Quilt Festival in Long Beach with two friends. It was super fun, yep I said it. The quilt show was awesome! It was neat to look at all the stitching in all of the quilts. To see all the various ways that quilters add texture and depth to the fabric. From hand painting the fabric to using itty bitty squares of different fabrics - it was all about the texture.

The quilt show also had a pretty large vendor area. We wandered around looking at all the quilts for sale and all the gadgets that you can buy. Those long arm quilt machines are intense. I'm not sure where you fit something so big! They were also a number of notions and buttons vendors which I'm a total sucker for! I picked out a giant 2 1/2 inch across pewter button that has a spider web with spider and fly embossed on it. I can wear it as a pin. I also picked up some ribbon. Gosh I love ribbon!

a most awesome quilt top for sale.
i couldn't justify it just for the smoking fish but he sure was cool!piles and piles of softness

We all went to a BBQ at a friends house after that and then to watch a movie at a warehouse later. (Doomsday! so awesome- Mad Max, period costumes and zombie lepers all wrapped into one movie!!!) I finally retrieved my guy from his ride share back from Tahoe gig around 11 and reflected on what an awesome weekend it had been!

i won the raffle for free groceries at trader joe's this week!
$25.oo worth of free tasty goodness all for using my own bags.

pretty cool!

that's my name on the chalkboard. i totally geeked out and took a picture!
still trying to stay cool here in the mountains, got some new supplies in the mail for screen printing so moving forward on the new prints. also some other random exciting news in the works but i'll have to get everything lined up before i can share. it's looking like i may have a busy fall after all this nice chill spring and summer.
have a great weekend everybody, my guy is out of town this weekend up in tahoe for a music festival he's playing at but i'm headed down to long beach to check out a quilt show with friends and lunch tomorrow with another friends. i'll squeeze some studio time in there somewheres!

monday

it's summer time and lord is it hot!
i basically spent the weekend hiding out in the more air conditioned parts of our house.

Saturday i got the studio all cleaned up and tidy!
i even went so far as to take everything down off the walls, sort out what was still inspiring to me and put some things back up. i think this is really important every now and then so as to have a fresh view on things.

yesterday i did my usual round of the farmers market, grocery store and later we went to a bbq.
i'm hoping this weather will cool down at some point so i can at least get back to printing. today i'm hopefully gonna finish the last bit of graphic work on some new prints i've been working on forever and then hopefully i'll get to start on exposing the screens and printing them!

friday

i picked up a delightful toy rabbit last week.
i'm not normally a big toy buyer, i tend to get bored of them and they just bug me collecting dust.
but this guy called out to me, the best part...his head bobs!
he's currently chillin' on my desk.
if i blow a breath of air over at him he does this slow nod- shaking his head back if forth.
it's super awesome!

also i wanted to share this service i ran across this morning that might be quite cool.
Blog2print I've not used it but it seems like they will print up your blog- post by post.
not quite sure how it works out looking but in theory it seems like a mighty cool tool. I'm such a paper junkie that it might be nice to have a printed version of my blog.

Wednesday

drawing lollypop trees, watching america's got talent and drinking negroni's.
yep, this is how i roll folks :)
i'm chillin' out this eve, figuring out where to put the tricycle riding bear- in the woods- in the forest- in the mountains....oh, wait those are all the same place...sorta.
my studio is a mess since last weeks sewing and metal smithing mayhem but i'm not interested in making it tidy yet. maybe tomorrow. no, there a bbq tomorrow...ok, the day after that...nope, a backyard party. hmm...it must be summer!

monday

Oof, What a whirlwind trip to the bay!

I'm so glad I changed my plans for this past weekend a few months ago to go on this trip. I got to make some awesome new things for it, be there for some awesome friends of mine, see my folks and have a awesometasticamazing time all weekend!!!

My guy and I hit the road early Friday morning and headed up to Oakland! Before stopping at our friends place we were staying we had to get delicious fried chicken sammys at Bake Sale Betty's and coffee at Cole coffee. Sitting in the mid afternoon sun and enjoying molasses cookies watching people come and go on collage ave was just the chill way to slid into the weekend.

After stopping in and dropping off all our stuff and a quick change we headed into the city for some endless rounds of cocktails at Beretta. So delish! Fun, innovative yummy list of handmade artisanal cocktails. We scored a great location at the bar and people watched while chatting with our neighbors and having a great time! After a bit my friend Holly B joined us and we had some more cocktails and then wandered off to The Front Porch to celebrate her birthday dinner! So much fun! So great to hang out with friends on their special day and so much better to see friends who live so far away! I gave her this amazing hat I made for her with a handmade sterling silver wishbone stickpin. She totally loved it!

After dropping her off we made our way back to Oakland for our only real nights sleep of the weekend. The next day my guy and I split up- he headed over to the American Steel warehouse to help with things for the party later and I headed into the city on my bike to meet up with more friends and spend my day wandering around and shopping! It was great! So many great things to see. I even got to pop into the candy store Holly B. works at called Miette and she hooked me up with some mighty fine chocolate and treats! Yay for friends in sugary places!

While the day was catching up with me I quickly hopped on my bike and headed back to the east bay to get ready for the Sand by the Ton party. And what a party it was!!! So many awesome peeps were there, everyone looked amazing!!! My guy rocked his new striped swim outfit so hard, he looked fantastic!!! Every time I saw him it put a smile on my face as he looked so great! It was a long, long night...we got back to the house around 4am. I spend most of my time in The Mutaytor merch booth selling stuff and hocking my poster. If you popped by I tried to say hello but it was super hectic and loud! I still have some posters if you want one, get 'em before they go!!!

Sunday after after too few hours of sleep we meet up with my folks at Cafe Rouge in Oakland for a yummy slow brunch. It was great to catch up and hang out with them. I was pretty sleepy by the end so after a quick stop for some ice cream at Sketch we headed home! A short detour on the I-5 to see if we could help out some friends with a blown tire we finally made it home around ten. It was a great weekend, a bit on the whirlwind side of things but so awesome! Sorry to those I didn't get to see this go round, hopefully next time!!!

wednesday

so, i took a few days off :)
we had a great 4th, i finished up some costumes for a show my guy is doing this coming weekend. i got some cooking in on friday- made homemade bbq sauce, chocolate chip cookies and put together a few new cocktail recipies. we went of a great bbq and boat ride out to the long beach harbor to see the fireworks on the the 4th and did some serious relaxing on sunday.
here we are on the boat. me geeking out and taking photos of us and my guy tolerating my crazyness.
this weekend we're off to the Sand by the Ton show in Oakland. We've got peeps now to hold down the fort so it should be a fun weekend of seeing lots of friends and fam as well as eating tons of good food. I'll be selling that poster I made last week so feel free to stop by the Mutaytor merch booth and pick one up ;)

wednesday

i'm still toiling away on a new batch of prints. the pre-printing work is taking a really long time or maybe i'm just letting it take a really long time.

but anyways, here's something silly i made this week.
it's a swim cap hat. inspired by old timey swim caps and a wee bit of Amelia Earhart. i made it mostly out of scraps i had in my box of tricks- i only ended up buying the star buttons. it has cute ruffle flowers you can't quite see in the pic.
today i jetted downtown to the fabric district to pick up some fabric to put together another fun project. i do get distracted makin' stuff sometimes.
because we're pretty busy the next few weekends i think i'm gonna wrap up the photoshop work on the new prints and hopefully have them ready to print mid month. i'm still pretty excited about these even though they are taking me forever, ok...not forever...i'm just really impatient and super excited to print the circusy carnie animals!
